London, UK – 11 January 2010 - Sendmail, Inc., the leading provider of reliable and secure email and messaging infrastructures, today released independent statistics pointing to a secure future for enterprise email. At the same time, Sendmail made a series of predictions regarding latest technology trends and their impact upon the enterprise email space in 2010 and beyond.

Results of a recent study conducted by Osterman Research reveal that email remains mission-critical to 97.6 per cent of individuals in large enterprises while 99.2 per cent believe email will remain equally important in 2010. Nearly half of respondents (45 per cent) reported that dependence on email is greater than ever.

“Email is far from dead,” claims Donald Massaro, CEO of Sendmail, Inc. “While alternative communication methods like Facebook and Twitter have been attracting a lot of media attention they remain largely a social phenomenon.

“Enterprise email remains an integral part of the standard business infrastructure and is used countless times a day to carry out all kinds of routine functions. Outside of personal communications between employees, enterprise email today is used ‘behind the scenes’ for everything from business processes, billing and statement delivery to CRM, marketing and other important ERP functions. Given the prevalence of email today and the important function it serves in daily business operations, its proliferation in the enterprise is set to continue for the foreseeable future,” he concluded.

A pioneer of email since its inception nearly 30 years ago, Sendmailhas seen many trends come and go. Sendmail expects much of 2010 to focus on security and efficiency in areas such as:

DLP in EMEA & US
• Employee failure to follow proper email policies and procedures still has the ability to embarrass major firms. As new privacy regulations start to come into effect throughout Europe, we anticipate further demand for data loss prevention continuing through 2010 as many organisations, both in the US and EMEA, further develop their DLP strategy and solution architecture to increase security.

Cloud Computing
• 2010 will see continued pressure for IT cost reductions leading to an increased demand for cloud services. As cloud providers continue to invest in security and additional services such as private clouds, we forecast an increase in the adoption rate of cloud services among large enterprises.

Outbound Bulk Email Delivery for Marketing Campaigns & More
• Another by-product of cost reduction measures witnessed in 2009 was a trend toward bringing some email services – from, bulk email delivery for marketing campaigns, customer communications, statement/billing delivery - in-house. Solutions and messaging platforms that offer this as an add-on application are set to gain from this trend.

Virtualisation
• The adoption of virtualisation has grown significantly in 2009, and will continue through 2010. Failover/Disaster-Recovery and server consolidation continue to drive demand. Improvements to security and operational aspects within virtual applications have removed many of the previous hurdles, inspiring greater adoption among SMBs and large enterprises alike.

Encryption
• Regulatory requirements and the need for stronger corporate security policies to ensure sensitive information being exchanged even between authorised parties remains confidential is driving demand for secure messaging solutions. Automated policy-driven architectures that enforce encryption based on security policies will prove to be critical. Organisations are no longer willing to rely on the end-user to determine what should be encrypted.
